Senior Communications & Content Strategist

Part-Time | Remote | Approximately 25 Hours/Week

($70-80k)

About Optim Communications

Optim Communications is a strategic communications firm that helps mission-driven organizations and leaders tell stronger stories and increase their impact.

We work with clients across education, early childhood, workforce development, philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, providing senior-level communications strategy alongside high-quality execution. Our work includes executive communications and thought leadership, media relations, digital content, reports, newsletters, case studies and integrated communications campaigns.

Optim is a small and growing firm, which means every member of our team plays a meaningful role in the work we produce. We are looking for an experienced communications professional who is an exceptional writer, editor and storyteller and wants to do substantive work in a flexible, part-time role.

The Role

Optim is seeking a Senior Communications & Content Strategist to develop high-quality content across a portfolio of mission-driven clients.

Writing is at the heart of this role. We're looking for someone who can quickly absorb complex information, identify what matters and turn it into clear, compelling communications for different audiences and platforms.

On any given day, that might mean drafting LinkedIn posts for a university president, turning a research report into an accessible article, developing an op-ed from detailed notes and your own research, writing a newsletter, creating a compelling case study or identifying the strongest story buried within a client's work.

This isn't a role for someone who wants to move away from writing as they become more senior. We're looking for someone who loves the craft of communications and wants to continue producing excellent work while also bringing the judgment and perspective that come with experience.

The Senior Communications & Content Strategist will work closely with Optim's Principal and Communications Manager and will have significant independence and ownership of assigned work.

What You'll Do

Writing, Editing and Storytelling

Writing and content development will comprise the majority of this role. Responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting executive communications and thought leadership content
  • Developing op-eds, articles and bylined pieces
  • Writing LinkedIn and other social content, including partner toolkits, for executives and organizations
  • Developing both standalone and recurring newsletters and email communications
  • Writing case studies, impact stories and organizational profiles
  • Turning research reports, data and technical information into accessible and engaging content
  • Developing website and blog content
  • Writing press releases, media pitches and announcements
  • Developing talking points, remarks, briefing materials, one-pagers and presentations
  • Reviewing transcripts, reports and background materials and identifying the strongest stories and messages

Content Strategy and Editorial Judgment

  • Identify compelling stories and thought leadership opportunities within client work
  • Help determine the strongest angle, format and audience for a piece of content
  • Develop content ideas, strategic communications plans and editorial calendars
  • Connect client expertise and priorities to timely conversations in their fields
  • Bring strong news judgment to decisions about what is worth saying and why
  • Recommend ways to extend strong ideas across multiple channels
  • Ensure content is accurate, well sourced and appropriate for the intended audience

Media Relations and Research

  • Develop media pitches and story ideas
  • Research reporters, publications, podcasts and other visibility opportunities
  • Conduct background research to support executive communications and thought leadership
  • Support targeted media outreach as needed

Client and Project Work

  • Participate in selected client meetings and interviews
  • Take ownership of content projects from initial idea or source material through final draft
  • Manage multiple assignments and deadlines across several clients
  • Communicate proactively about progress, questions and potential issues
  • Collaborate with Optim's Principal, Communications Manager, administrative lead, and outside designers, web developers, freelance writers, and other partners

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced communications professional with approximately 7–12+ years of relevant experience in communications, journalism, public relations, content development, executive communications or a related field.

Above all, we're looking for an exceptional writer.

The strongest candidates will have:

  • A portfolio demonstrating excellent professional writing across multiple formats
  • The ability to find a compelling story or argument within complicated source material
  • Exceptional editing skills and attention to language
  • Experience writing for executives or other senior leaders
  • The ability to understand unfamiliar or complex subjects quickly
  • Experience translating research, data or technical information for broader audiences
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
  • The judgment and experience to take a loosely defined assignment and determine how to move it forward
  • Comfort receiving and incorporating feedback from multiple stakeholders

Experience in education, early childhood, workforce development, philanthropy, nonprofits or other mission-driven organizations is particularly valuable.

Journalism experience is also highly valued.

How We Work

Optim is a small, collaborative and fully remote team. We value excellent work, responsiveness, curiosity, sound judgment and mutual respect.

This is a part-time position of approximately 25 hours per week. Some availability during regular business hours is necessary for client and team meetings, but the role offers significant flexibility in how the remainder of the workweek is structured.

We use AI and other emerging tools thoughtfully to support our work, but excellent writing at Optim depends on human judgment, reporting, critical thinking and a deep understanding of the people and organizations for whom we write. There are also projects for which we do not use AI at all, so this role is a strong fit for someone who is comfortable writing with and without AI.

Why Join Optim

This is an opportunity for an experienced communications professional to continue doing sophisticated, substantive work without the schedule of a traditional full-time role.

Because Optim is a small firm, you'll have considerable ownership of your work and the opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of the company.

Salary: $70,000–$80,000 annually for approximately 25 hours per week. This is a part-time W-2 position with prorated paid time off. Health benefits are not currently offered for this role.

To apply, please email your resume, cover letter, and three work samples to admin@optimcommunications.com.
